As early as 1965, Dr. Franz Köhler Chemie GmbH developed the world’s first approved cardioplegic solution, which stopped the heart by infusing a highly concentrated magnesium solution – a groundbreaking method for protecting cardiac muscle tissue. In collaboration with the renowned Professor Dr. H.-J. Bretschneider (1922–1993), we began in 1973 to research a new organ-protective solution with exceptional properties. In the early 1980s, the first heart arrest combined with cardioprotection using the HTK Solution according to Bretschneider was successfully performed.

Pioneering Work and Global Recognition

We were the pioneers who developed and received approval for this method. Thanks to numerous superior advantages, our cardioplegic solution has since achieved an outstanding position in cardiac and transplant medicine. Today, it is routinely used in more than 100 countries for heart surgeries and organ transplantations.
