“The achievements in the field of organ-saving measures and the new findings on pathophysiology of ischemic organs are to this day of utmost importance for modern surgery.”

Franz J. Köhler Award

The Franz J. Köhle Award is a science prize granted by the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (DGTHG) for outstanding achievements in the field of organ protection with particular regard to the heart.

On March 14th, 1989, the DGTHG decided to set up this special award. In doing so the society commemorates its connection with the eponym – who in dialogue with scientists and clinicians contributed substantially to the development and improvement of the myocardium and organ protection.
Every year the award ceremony takes place on the occasion of the annual convention of the DGTHG.

A committee conducts the award process by exploring and evaluating the achievements of physicians and natural scientists. The prize, worth 7,500 Euro can be shared; the award winner or winners do not have to be members of the society.

Franz-Koehler Inflammation Award

In 2010, the German Society for Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) launched an international science award in the field of intensive care: The Franz-Koehler Inflammation Award.

The prize, worth 5,000 Euro, is donated by Dr. F. Köhler Chemie for outstanding research achievements in the field of pathophysiology, prophylaxis and therapy of inflammation in its diverse forms in the area of perioperative medicine.

The award ceremony takes place within the framework of the yearly opening conference of the “Hauptstadtkongress” Anesthesia and Intensive Care (HAI).
